Chautauqua School of Art Residency (7/25/21-8/28/21)

Chautauqua Visual Arts presents CVA School of Art Participants Exhibition that opens August 1 in Fowler-Kellogg Center. I’ve been here for one week so far and it has been intense and pretty awesome. WIFI has been spotty and food isn’t too great, but I love this place so far. Shown below is “Libera”, a pair of paintings with sound. You can play the glockenspiel on both pieces.

Performance by Chihiro Shibayama
at 4:30p, 5:00p, 5:30p
.
.
Chihiro @chihiroplayspercussion and I met a year ago while we were working for the @uscensusbureau during the pandemic.
.
At work, we weren't allowed to have cell phones, pencils, basically have nothing with us, because of the super strict privacy policy.
.
We were so creative. During a quick break, Chihiro would tap on the desk and pressed keyboard to create beats, other coworkers joined by dancing and singing - then we would quickly go back to our desks.
.
It was such an incredible experience in very weird circumstance. I wanted to create something with her as I always wanted to put music in my paintings, not knowing what will happen.
.
This is the result of our first #collaboration. This is about a lost composer Willie Fullerton Jr., and his lover Percy Anderson who was a stage designer and painter. It’s about home, family, love, inclusion, struggle, and art.

How to Care for the Succulent, presented by Women’s Cactus for the Arts, a collective comprised of four neurotic artmaking practices: Kirstin Lamb, Daisy Patton, Rachel Sydlowski, and Kate Bae; Our work speaks to ideas of beauty, sincerity and excess in the decorative arts without succumbing to the cynicism so prevalent in the contemporary art landscape.

SPRING/BREAK Art Show NYC 2020

So busy prepping for the show! I made this little promo image for the SPRING/BREAK art show.

"How to Care for the Succulent," presented by Women's Cactus for the Arts, a collective comprised of four neurotic artists: myself, Kirstin Lamb (@kirstin.lamb), Daisy Patton (@daisy_patton), and Rachel Sydlowki (@rachelsyd). .

.
As an immigrant, I have been misreading the word "caucus" as "cactus" for the past fifteen years. I always wondered what cactus has to do with a women's art group, and assumed it must be due to women's necessary similarity to a cactus: because woman had to be strong, resilient and prickly in order to defend and stand up for themselves in historically male dominant society.
.
.
It was Kirstin Lamb who pointed out my misunderstanding during a conversation at the #soaringgardensresidency that we attended together. .oops lol

Kate's Newsletter 2020 #1 - Sneak Peak + SPRING/BREAK Art Show NYC

Dear Friends,

How are you? I hope the new year is treating you well. I've been in Serlachius Residency in Finland since January 8, and gathering so many good memories. Lately I am having these moments of my heart and mind in sync and experiencing the joy that I am not used to - this really is something. I am sure many of you already know and felt this feeling but I really haven't. It always felt just out of reach for me.

Well, I think I am just beginning to shed my little shell. I am stunned that I found it in Finland out of all the place, and for that I am immensely grateful. I will be showing the work I made in this residency on Friday, Feb 21 from 4-6p -- I will be working on this series for a while I think.

My proposal also made into SPRING/BREAK Art Show in NYC, March 3-9 at 625 Madison Ave. Here is a little sneak peak:

I started to combine printmaking + painting + kateness. So far I've calling them the prototypes, and curious how they would blossom.

"Status" aims to salutes and honors human expressions rather than speak to the question of individuals immigration status in their adopted temporary or permanent home.

Curated by Zahra Banyamerian, "Status" invites you to leave the dominant narratives about immigrants and immigration behind and embrace the artists' responses to the question of self, the socio-politics and/or poetics of the(ir) world. The exhibition features work by eleven artists, from the New York Foundation for the Art’s Immigrant Artist Mentoring Program, who outline their status in artistic expression not their movement into the world.
